“The only reason why we ask other people how their weekend was is so we can tell them about our own weekend.”

Chuck Palahniuk, Invisible Monsters

Instead of beating myself up when I miss a day on the weekend, I’ve decided to adapt and post about the weekend all at once if it suits me better. Look at me embracing my best instead of demanding perfection! Progress!

Saturday morning started with a flurry of clothes washing and doughnuts. When we got up I stripped the bed and washed all the bedding before remaking my bed. Pat went home for a bit to grab some clothes and brought back a mixed dozen doughnuts. Oh dear! But I won’t beat myself up about that either. It served as a reminder that I really am not all that crazy about doughnuts.

We planned to go into town Saturday night to attend a songwriters circle that my niece performed in. I thought we could go early and grab some supper someplace, but when I learned that the power was still out in Douglastown I figured all the restaurants in Newcastle and Chatham would be even more backed up. Instead we ordered take-out from Trio in Blackville. I got the 12-inch half and half special, vegetarian pizza on one side, garlic fingers on the other. Yummy! And left-overs for a midnight snack after the show!

I also splurged and got a bottle of Don David malbec. To my surprise I enjoyed a mostly dry January since I found some non-alcoholic red wines that I actually enjoy, but I had anxiety about going out and opted to take the edge off my nerves. Old habits do die hard. I downed about half the bottle of malbec with my supper and then we were off to the pub where I had another two glasses of white wine. The show was amazing and highly emotional as these shows always are for me. We left immediately afterward and avoided any uncomfortable chit-chat.

Back in the safety of my home, I finished off the rest of the pizza and malbec and stayed up way past my bedtime watching Ted Lasso and Coronation Street, falling into sleep around 1:30 in the wee hours of the morning.

I had a slight wine dehydration headache when I woke up Sunday morning, despite matching glass for glass wine with water. Wow! Now I’m a lightweight! Still, I’m proud that there has only been two evenings with real booze in them so far in 2024. More progress!

After toasted cinnamon raisin bagels with crunchy peanut butter, more doughnuts, and the rest of last week’s Coronation Street, Pat went home and I spent the remainder of the day watching British crime dramas and van life videos on YouTube.

I plan to have an early night so I can easily get up at 4 am and begin my week. Pat says he will come down at 6 am to accompany me on a walk. I would love if this could become our new thing, early morning walks. In February and March it will be dark and cold, probably snowy, but as we head into spring and then summer and fall, it will be light and warm and fabulous to listen to the birds singing and maybe seen other wildlife on our travels. This kind of activity ticks so many boxes and really gets the day off to a great start.

I maintained a solid 8 out of 15 this weekend, 53%, which isn’t half bad for so early into the year.
